Ganglion cysts are benign, and fluid filled growths that often appear as small bumps on the top of your foot. Since they can grow just beneath the surface of the skin, they are hidden and can be difficult to detect. Cysts typically form on a ligament, tendon, nerve, or muscle and may appear in groups.
The actual cause of ganglion cysts is often hard to determine, and they can change the size and even disappear altogether, only to return later. A cyst growing on a nerve may cause a numbing and tingling sensation.
Since ganglion cysts don’t always cause pain or problems, treatment isn’t always necessary, but you should have any growth on your foot checked by your foot doctor to make sure it isn’t something cancerous.
Treatment of a ganglion cyst may include the following:
- Removing the fluid with a needle
- Injecting a steroid solution to keep the cyst from returning
- Using custom fitted orthotic inserts to redistribute and decrease pressure on the cyst and thereby allow healing to occur
Always keep an eye on any unusual growths on your feet, particularly if they decrease or increase in size or undergo color changes.
